A new Pennsylvania company has taken Benjamin Franklin's beloved “air bath” concept and turned it into an industrial-strength shower that can clean work clothes of hazardous dust.

HalenHardy's mobile air shower is designed to reduce worker exposure to respirable crystalline silica and other toxins by removing dust from worker clothing in 30 seconds, says the company, founded in January 2013.

The MASHH Air Shower can remove dust from workclothes in 30 seconds, the company says. An entire crew can clean its clothes without interrupting the unit.

The MASHH Air Shower removes dust from contaminated clothing in multiple industries, including demolition, construction and remediation.

No Interruptions

The MASHH Air Shower can be activated with a single button, and an "Always Available" function allows an entire team of workers to be processed without interruption, the company says.

The "Always Available" AMP Air Generator supplies more than 700 CFM at low pressure (under 10 psi) to the air shower. Heated and cooled air packages are available.

According to the company, a HEPA Vacuum operating at 2,000 CFM removes 99.8 percent of particulate from the exhaust. Additionally, the system detects and notifies the user when a filter change is required.

The shower is designed for workers in construction, demolition, remediation and other industries, according to HalenHardy.

The adjustable 63-inch air knife can be adjusted for worker height and air flow control.

Stop Slapping

"When dust-covered workers go on break, we've observed that they almost always do two things," said Bob Glenn, HalenHardy Chief Scientist and Director of Silicosis Prevention Advisors.

"First, they remove their respirator. Next, they slap the dust from their shoulders, chests and arms. This is a very hazardous practice that increases their personal exposure."

This slapping action can send microscopic crystalline silica particles directly into a worker's breathing zone, increasing exposure levels, according to HalenHardy.

About the Company

The MASHH Air Shower was selected as the Environmental, Health & Safety Technology Innovation of the Year at the Shale Insight Conference and Technology Showcase.

Bellwood, PA-based HalenHardy LLC develops products and services to improve worker health and safety in industries including oil and gas, mining, construction, remediation and demolition.
