From architecture to automobiles to aerospace, PPG Industries has unveiled a bright forecast for global color trends in 2014.

The new 2014 Global Color Trends reflects a "fact-based approach to the science of color," according to PPG. The 100-page book draws on a network of 23 global color experts in the automotive, architectural, aerospace and consumer products business segments.

Turning Oakleaf, PPG's 2014 Color of the Year, is part of the "earthy, primitive" New Spirit palette.

The new report follows PPG's recent announcement of its color of the year: Turning Oakleaf, "a soft but energetic buttercream yellow."

PPG says it expects the color to play a prominent role in home decor, automotive and electronics as part of its forecast for brighter, more optimistic colors next year.

Driving the 2014 color spectrum in multiple markets is a mega-trend that the Pittsburgh-based paint and coatings company calls "refreshed thinking."

PPG's Turning Oakleaf is part of five color palettes that make up the new PPG Voice of Color collection called Pause & Refresh. The collection "represents a new spirit of creativity," says PPG, "born out of an increased consumer desire to move forward in fresh, new directions."

New Spirit: Earthy and Primitive

This palette, which features the color of the year, "focuses on the new consciousness of earth and organic references. A calm and modern approach to color captures earthy tones for a relaxed atmosphere, combined with the raw colors of the great outdoors."

Hi-Breed: Organic and Man-Made

"The intersection of the organic and man-made worlds creates a palette of colors that work in harmony to capture both realms with soft yet lively color options. ...The palette captures the manner in which technology and nature work in harmony by incorporating the dark gray of city streets into the natural hues of flowers and springtime landscapes."

The palette is all about an expressive, live-out-loud theme that homeowners can use to unleash their inner originality and imagination."
