Technical guidance on assessing and addressing the corrosive drywall plaguing tens of thousands of U.S. structures is now available from the American Industrial Hygiene Association.

Assessment and Remediation of Corrosive Drywall provides a comprehensive approach to evaluating and treating homes and buildings with the problem drywall.

According to the 23-page guide, corrosive drywall contains gypsum contaminated with sulfur and can emit gaseous pollutants that blacken or corrode metal surfaces.

“Most corrosive drywall was imported [to the U.S.] from China between 2005 and 2007,” the guide says. The problematic drywall is generally ruled out in installations before 2001.

Still, tens of thousands of U.S. homes and buildings contain the problem product, the guide estimates.

The guide cautions against use of the common label "Chinese drywall," noting that not all drywall products imported from China have shown problems.

Evaluation and Correction

Initial screening for the presence of corrosive drywall involves a five-step process that includes site documentation, interviews and corrosion inspection, according to the guide.

drywall removal

The free guide outlines recommendations for protecting workers during removal.

The document also explains how to safely execute corrective measures to restore air quality in affected structures.

Recommendations for protecting workers from hazards during the removal process and setting up controls to eliminate drywall dust and odors are also covered.

The AIHA’s Construction Committee and Indoor Environmental Quality Committee developed the guide.
