Reconstruction of a century-old train depot in Virginia has left the station, as the structure's keepers have issued a request for bids on the project.

The Prospect (VA) Historical Society is seeking proposals for the reconstruction of the historic depot, in Farmville, VA.

Bids are due Dec. 5. A mandatory pre-bid meeting was held Nov. 13.

Scope of Work

The project involves reconstructing the 2,327-square-foot single-story wood and steel-framed train depot, which was damaged by a fire.

The project includes cleaning and coating steel lintel and ledge angles, as well as concrete walls, interior air duct surfaces, and exposed damper surfaces with various alkyd, acrylic, and latex enamel systems.  Touch-up coating application will also be required for shop-primed items.

The 100-year-old station has become a venue for private parties. A complete reconstruction is planned.

The project also includes bid packages for concrete work, roofing, brick, siding, plumbing and electrical work.

About the Site

Plans for the passenger station date to 1899, and construction was completed in 1903.

The site, known as David Lot, quickly became popular. In 1979, a Pepsi-Cola commercial was shot at the station, according to the Farmville-Prince Edward Historical Society.

Norfolk Southern ended through traffic over the old rail line in 2003 and abandoned the line in 2004. When the company announced plans to demolish the station, local residents rallied to save and remodel the building, which was deeded to the town of Farmville.

Today, the right-of-way is part of a statewide rails-to-trails project, and the station has been transformed into a venue for private parties.
