Q: How do you set a new world record?

A: Invent your own feat.

And when better than the dog days of August to establish a new record for the world's dullest event: watching paint dry?

The event was the unlikely brainchild of the Philadelphia Flyers, which invited fans (with cameras and a lot of time on their hands) to watch the pre-season painting of lines and logos Aug. 18 on the ice at Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center, Flyers publicist Rebecca Goodman reported on Twitter.

The Flyers promoted the event on Facebook and Twitter. Attendees Tweeted about the thrill of the event using hashtag #WFCIceMaking, and Comcast captured the action. (There was no information, alas, on the coating system used.)

Some 195 fans answered the call, and the team hopes the event will set a Guinness World Record for Most Number of People Watching Paint Dry.

Since Guinness reportedly has no such category now, the faithful fans' chances are considered excellent.

Watching paint dry

A Philadelphia Flyers fan keeps his son in on all the paint-drying action Aug. 19 at the Wells Fargo Center. The two fans were among 195 in attendance.

Still, the decision is not final, and Guinness judges report that they have been busy.

Guinness advises that it has awarded more than 30 new world record titles in the last month, including records for Most Spoons Balanced on the Face (28), Fastest Time to Eat Three Pickled Eggs (36.10 seconds, demolishing The Eggman's old record of 42.78), and Fastest Time to Type the Alphabet on an iPad (2.47 seconds).

Flyers fans watching paint dry? Good to see the team found something to do that was equally as uneventful as their playoff season this year. (Go Pens!)
