Intelligent Shield, new from EnviroECOats, is a “smart” exterior coating designed to be highly reflective, self cleaning, mold resistant, and energy saving, the manufacturer reports.

The product, which incorporates technology from Industrial Nanotech Inc., is designed for both commercial and residential applications. The water-based, environmentally friendly, low VOC (40 g/L) formulation comes in eight "Cool Color" choices for exterior painting projects.

Reducing Cooling Costs

The coating uses a combination of reflective and insulating technology that reflects away the sun to keep homes and other buildings cooler and lower energy costs. In its natural white, the coating reflects more than 82 percent of the sun's radiant heat, although reflectivity varies according to choice of tint, the manufacturer says.

The untinted white base color reflects more than 82 percent of the sun's radiant heat, the manufacturer says. The coating can be tinted, which affects the reflectivity level.

The nanoparticle matrix reduces the temperature transfer by about 20 percent, according to EnviroECOats.

The product is designed to reduce cooling costs for homes and commercial buildings, while also offering a self-cleaning surface to reduce maintenance costs. It can be used over brick, drywall, vinyl siding, wood, stucco, concrete and other building materials.

This nanotechnology-based coating is applied with a paint sprayer, roller, or brush. The product has a flat, slightly textured finish. The product has a suggested retail price of $299.75 for five gallons.

That's one expensive latex. Didn't see any warranty mentioned on their site either.

Thanks for your question Tom. The Intelligent Shield coating has a 10-year warranty. I've asked our team to update the website to include that information. The nanotechnology components that insulate and reflect to save energy, as well as provide the self-cleaning, do increase the price a bit past that of plain latex paints, but the energy savings helps recoup the cost over time.
