An employee charged in the April beating death of internationally known architect Graham Downes will stand trial in California, authorities say.

After hearing evidence presented during a two-day preliminary hearing, San Diego Superior Court Judge John Einhorn ruled Wednesday (July 31) that property manager Higinio Salgado, 31, would stand trial Sept. 18.

International architect Graham Downes was found unconscious April 19 in front of his home. He died two days later. An employee, Higinio Salgado, has been charged in the case.

Salgado is charged with murder and faces 25 years to life imprisonment if convicted. He has pleaded not guilty.

Salgado’s defense attorney, Jose Badillo, did not immediately respond Thursday (Aug. 1) to a request for comment .

Police officers say they found Downes, 55, unconscious shortly before 2 a.m. April 19 in front of his San Diego home with injuries to his head and neck, according to local news outlets. Salgado was found uninjured lying next to him, reports said. The officers responded to neighbors’ calls reporting a fight.

Downes died two days later from his injuries, according to his firm’s publicist.

‘One-sided Attack’

Prosecutors allege that Salgado felt his job was threatened and was upset that Downes might rehire a former supervisor whom he disliked, news reports said.

Prosecutors told the judge during the hearing that the altercation was not a fight, but a "one-sided attack," media outlets noted.

The architect, whose true name was Downes Graham Trouncer, was the principal and founder of Graham Downes Architecture Inc., a firm renowned for its retail, hospitality, entertainment and urban mixed-use projects.

Blunt Force Trauma

Downes suffered 17 to 21 impact injuries to his neck and head, according to local reports, citing a deputy medical examiner’s testimony.

Dr. Steven Campman testified that some of the injuries were consistent with strangulation.

The architect's portfolio included many high-profile restaurants and hotels.

“This was blunt force trauma injuries about the head and the neck,” Einhorn said, according to a local NBC News affiliate.

“Implied malice is quite easily found.”

Testimony during the hearing also revealed that Downes had a blood-alcohol level of 0.23 percent.

Work Dispute

Witnesses at the hearing shed light on the alleged events that led to the altercation, reports relate.

Anne MacDougall, an assistant at Downes’ firm, reportedly testified that more than a dozen employees were invited to a Happy Hour at Downes’ office on April 18. Salgado was in attendance.

Members of the group later went to Downes’ home, where the name of Salgado’s former supervisor, Simon Terry-Lloyd, came up during conversation. The supervisor reportedly left the firm in 2011.

"You better not give him my [expletive] job," Salgado told Downes. "I [expletive] hate that guy," Salgado said of Terry-Lloyd, according to MacDougall.

Downes replied, "Don't worry about it. That's not going to happen," MacDougall testified.

She said Salgado and Downes had been on the sidewalk when she and another co-worker left the home, reports said.

Neighbors also testified about what they heard and saw during the incident.

A police officer described the scene when he arrived. The officer noted that Salgado had blood on his face and shirt but was not injured, reports said.

After Downes was taken off life support, Salgado was arrested and charged with murder.
