3M Touts ‘All-Purpose Rescue Solution’

A new controlled-descent rescue device allows for safe, steady descent of workers from heights up to 590 feet, reports distributor 3M.

The 3M and DEUS Escape and Rescue System is designed to be an “all-purpose rescue solution” for workers at heights, according to 3M.

In September, 3M became the exclusive distributor of Boulder, CO-based DEUS Escape and Rescue's products for fall protection-related industries. 

According to 3M, the system weighs less than three pounds and can be used to rescue multiple workers in a short period of time.

The kits are available for individual and multi-person escape, assisted rescue and self-rescue.

Two controlled-descent device options are available:

  • The 3300, for rescue from heights up to 350 feet, at a descent rate of 3 meters (9.8 feet) per second; and
  • The 3700, for rescue from heights of up to 590 feet, at a descent rate of 2 meters (6.6 feet) per second.

"When people think of those working at extreme heights, they think of the risk of falling," said Andrew Johnson, 3M's Fall Protection Product Marketer. "They don't think about the risk of people getting stranded in an emergency or after a fall, but we know that's just as real of a concern." 

Johnson said the systems helps provide security for industries including oil and gas, electrical distribution, utilities, wind energy and manufacturing.
