System Solution: Balancing Speed with Performance

Protective coatings are typically chosen as the primary means for controlling corrosion on large steel structures, driven by the need for efficiency and long-term effectiveness. When faced with compressed project schedules, however, protective coating application is seen by many as one more thing on a long, time-consuming to-do list. It is not surprising, then, that owners with assets in oil & gas, power generation, infrastructure and other sectors are keen to use fast-drying coatings to reduce time and cost.

While faster-drying coating systems can be specified to improve productivity, they should also maintain integrity over the long term. It is important to find the right balance between quality and speed.

Protection and Productivity

To address these needs, Hempel created Hempaprime Multi 500, a high-build epoxy intermediate coating, to deliver performance and long service life in severe corrosive environments, while ensuring fast drying times and short minimum overcoat intervals. This enables three coats to be applied in 20% less time than currently used products* without compromising quality, strength, finish or the high-volume solids of the coating.

Protective coatings are often applied toward the end of the fabrication or construction process, which adds time pressure, so a versatile and adaptable coating is key. Hempaprime Multi 500 can be used direct to metal or on primed surfaces, as primer, intermediate or topcoat application and for minor repairs, offering customers the simplicity of a single coating solution. It does not require thinning in optimum conditions and can be applied by spray, brush or roller, providing further efficiencies to asset owners.

The fast drying time, faster hardness development and improved cracking resistance makes it possible to move the coated steel — or build upon it faster — with a reduced risk of damaging the coating. This can decrease the need for corrective work, saving time and money. This high-performance solution is formulated for long service life in heavy industrial applications, helping to minimize maintenance requirements.

Meeting Industry Requirements

Performance, improved productivity and fast drying are not the only factors asset owners look at when choosing a protective coating. It must also meet strict industry requirements. Hempaprime Multi 500 meets the toughest anti-corrosive test requirements for the most severe environments, including ISO 12944-5 C5 High and 12944-9 CX (previously  ISO 20340 C5-M). Coating systems based on Hempaprime Multi 500 are pre-qualified for NORSOK M-501 Ed. 6, System 1.
