WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2019

When a tough, single-use blasting abrasive is needed for surface preparation, coal slag offers a number of beneficial features, according to North Dakota-based Abrasives Incorporated, manufacturer of Black Magic Coal Slag. These include:

• Hard angular particles;
• Consistent weight and size;
• Fast cleaning;
• Excellent profile for coating adhesion;
• No heavy metals;
• Conforms to environmental standards and
• Low dusting.

See the abrasive in action:

The company’s product consists of recycled lignite coal from neighboring power plants and is turned into a highly effective blasting material. It is created from a high-heat source, which yields an especially hard abrasive. As a result, the company says, Black Magic cleans faster and better and has less dust than other slag products.

Typical uses include surface preparation on pipelines, bridges, storage tanks, ships, water towers, new construction, concrete and mill scale removal. Coal slag has other purposes, as well, including its use as roofing granules, as a base for roads and bridges, and as bunker sand on golf courses.

Grit sizes offered are:
• 8-20 course;
• 16-40 medium;
• 24-40 medium fine;
• 30-60 fine and
• 40-60 extra fine.

Black Magic is packaged in 25-, 50- or 80-pound bags; jumbo cells of approx. 3,800 pounds; pneumatic trailers or railcars.
