Don’t Paint Brick and Masonry? Nonsense.

Painted brick can be quite beautiful, but you may have heard that brick should not be painted and that painted brick poses maintenance challenges, especially as the paint ages. Thankfully, mineral silicate paints and stains are ideally suited to brick and masonry and pose no unique or long-term maintenance headaches.

Sometimes, only a painted brick surface will lend the desired aesthetic to your design, or a facade or interior brick surface simply requires a refresh to meet more modern design needs. Often times, too, repairs to brick and mortar impart an unacceptable appearance, which needs to be disguised. Painting brick with traditional acrylic or latex paints can be risky, especially as the finish ages and loses flexibility.  These paints can also artificially seal the masonry surface and trap moisture vapor within the building envelope, which can lead to a series of problems.   Colorful brick and stone row houses. PHOTO: © DREAMSTIME.COM

Mineral silicate paints from Keim are perfectly suited to brick and masonry and are made from mostly the same raw materials as both the brick and mortar, delivering unique performance properties:

  • Mineral paints penetrate masonry and form permanent chemical bonds within both masonry units and mortar; they will never lose adhesion or peel.
  • Extremely vapor-permeable finishes allow masonry to “breathe” naturally, and moisture vapor, which can accumulate in masonry walls, escapes freely to the drier environment and never damages the mineral paint finish.
  • Using only natural mineral pigments and fillers, like the masonry itself, these finishes look incredibly natural and will never impart an artificial sheen or appearance — and when wet, colors darken like the masonry itself.
  • No matter what color you choose, you can rely on fade-resistant performance for decades and decades. Mineral colors are naturally UV-stable and will not fade.
  • All natural, ecologically friendly and very sustainable, due to their long life, mineral silicate paints are ideal for green-build demands and are never modified with solvents or pesticides.

Mineral silicate paints and stains provide a compatible and perfectly suitable finish for just about any type of masonry. Surfaces are protected against wind-driven rain and can be opaque or transparent, depending upon the desired aesthetics. Keim has made it extremely easy to select and specify pure mineral silicate finishes for masonry. Learn more here.
