Stopping Corrosion Before It Starts

By Lee Greer, Chief Engineer, Maxon Technologies

Traditional, industrial coating methods use a coating, such as an epoxy, to form a barrier between a structure's metal surface and corrosive elements in the environment. While this process is fairly simple in a lab setting, application to existing structures on site is more difficult, complicated by factors such as weather, mix ratios, confined spaces and the necessity for aggressive preparation of the metal. And traditional methods typically fight the symptoms of corrosion, on the surface, rather than the chemistry at the source of corrosion inside the metal.

Using a solution that goes below the corroded layer addresses the corrosion process where and how it occurs. Maxon Technologies’ CRS (Corrosion Retardant Solution) penetrates up to 610 microns (24 mils) in seven days (SEM/EDS testing at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) — and it can pass through limited top layers of rust and paint.

How it works. CRS is a single-component primer that doesn't just go on metal but into metal to abate corrosion. The product has a nanoparticle structure and oxygen-scavenging properties that allow it to pass through paint, epoxy and tightly adhered, intact rust.

Cost-efficiency and time savings. The penetration properties of CRS eliminate the need for abrasive blasting or harsh chemicals in surface preparation. This reduces labor costs associated with traditional coating systems by 60- to 80-percent and shortens project duration.

Safety. CRS is a water-borne product, UL GreenGuard Gold certified and contains no VOCs; therefore, it's safe for the environment and for personnel, requires fewer costly safety measures and provides significant scheduling advantages.

Where it's been successful. The CRS system has been used to stop the corrosion process in powder coating, mining, welding and marine applications for internationally recognized companies.
