New Solutions to the Demands of the Coatings Industry


The demanding world of coatings for automotive, aerospace, agriculture and construction equipment applications requires formulators and coating manufacturers to meet critical challenges developing in the industry. Manufacturers are looking for high chemical resistance against tough and corrosive fluids, scratch resistance and low volatile organic compounds, all while maintaining a lower overall cost to consumers.

To meet these needs, coatings solutions often require a blend of several different resins and various additives with properties that formulators must optimize to produce the desired results. While one property may be improved, it’s often at the expense of another quality in the coating system. But a new hyperbranched polyester platform from BASF allows formulators to tune various functionalities of the resin, such as Tg and OH value.

Basonol HPE 1170 B, a polyester resin based on this new platform, has been developed by BASF to address some of the coating challenges in these markets. Unlike its linear polymer counterpart, this resin’s hyperbranched spherical structure allows for added performance. When co-blended with an acrylic or conventional polyester resin in a coating system, it can help to improve chemical resistance and hardness of the system.

To improve reflow, scratch resistance and chemical resistance properties, the new resin can be used as a co-binder (5-30%) on total polyol solid for clearcoat and topcoat applications. Combining it with a high-solid acrylic polyol can increase the coating system’s pot life while extending the open time of applied coatings.

In polyester-melamine or acrylic-melamine baking enamels, the resin can also enable enhanced curing characteristics. Replacing 20% of the polyol in such a coating system can enable improved film properties for a higher-performance coating or a reduction in curing time or temperature for reduced energy consumption.

Key product characteristics include highly functional -OH and -COOH groups and spherical shape, which leads to low chain entanglement, lower viscosity in solution, higher solids (lower VOCs) and excellent weatherability. Key applications for this resin include, but are not limited to, automotive OEM basecoat for interior and exterior applications for plastics, refinish clearcoat, agriculture and construction equipment topcoat applications.

When Basonol HPE 1170 B is co-blended with an acrylic or conventional polyester resin in a coating system, it can help to improve chemical resistance and hardness of the system.

As automotive and other manufacturers demand that coating suppliers support reduced costs without sacrificing properties, Basonol HPE 1170 B could be a viable co-blending resin to help meet these demands.
