ATS’s Materials Engineering, Corrosion, & Failure Analysis group provides a range of services, which include coatings selection, coatings specification, cathodic protection testing, corrosion control designs, asset & risk management program development, procedure development, and training development.

Facility description: ATS has Metallurgy and Chemistry laboratories that are equipped with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), XRF analyzers, optical microscopes, image analysis system, sample prep equipment, micro-hardness testers, etc.

Position Summary

A successful candidate will have demonstrated ability of being team lead of complex and innovative corrosion, coatings, and asset management projects including experience in planning, executing, and reporting. A suitable candidate has practical knowledge of coating systems including understanding of product specifications, product selection, application methods, inspections, and failure analysis. An ideal candidate has a broad experience designing of corrosion control including advanced testing techniques, cathodic protection designs, and condition assessments. A successful candidate will have previous hands-on experience with coatings including surface preparation, application, lab testing, and field/shop inspections. This role will support developing coating and corrosion control systems for a variety of utility asset types including electric facilities, pipelines, vessels, tanks, and nuclear facilities. A suitable candidate will have demonstrated experience applying scientific methods and work experience in asset and risk management to develop and evaluate new technologies and techniques. Furthermore, the ideal candidate will have a track record of assessing business conditions to identify opportunities for innovations, cost-reductions, and process improvements. A suitable candidate will have previous knowledge and experience reading, interpreting, and developing engineering drawings, product specifications and other technical documents. An ideal candidate will be able to apply their expertise and scientific work methods to develop integrity and risk management applications for the organization. This role will occasionally assist in miscellaneous engineering/test projects as necessary (e.g. mechanical engineering principles, finite element analysis, etc.)

Strong oral and written communication skills with a customer focus and a can-do attitude are required.

Successful candidates should be able to communicate with client, other team engineers, and team technicians to develop testing programs with effective results in a fast-paced environment. This job requires developing and promoting strong client relationships, having a can-do attitude and being sensitive to client issues. The right candidate will actively contribute and when appropriate lead in a team environment of brainstorming, troubleshooting, and problem-solving efforts.

Travel requirement: Regular travel to field locations throughout the PG&E territory for required testing, observation, consultation, and training. Approx. 50 percent of working time

Work Conditions: Must be able to climb tank stairways, enter tanks through manways, walk pipeline right-of-way in all terrain and withstand extreme weather conditions in both summer and winter.

Responsibilities

  • Safety: Demonstrate safe working practices at all times. Advocate focus on customer, general public and employee safety in all work practices.
  • Client Management: Consulting experience is a plus, excellent communication skills (oral and written) are essential. Successful candidates should work well with others and have a client focus. Job requires developing and promoting strong client relationships, having a can do attitude and being sensitive to client issues.
  • Job Management: Plan and direct laboratory projects and administer outside contract work effectively. Experience with job development - including scope definition, schedule and cost estimates are crucial.
  • Written documentation of results, conformance with established practices for generating and archiving reports with an attention to detail. Adhere to sample logging and tracking procedures and comply with project tracking/management requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Material Science, Corrosion, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or other related field.
  • 5 years of related experience in Coatings, Corrosion Control, and Asset Management
  • Possess coatings related certifications (e.g. NACE Coating Inspector Level 1, SSPC Protective Coatings Specialist, NACE Cert. Coating Inspector Level III) or Corrosion Related Certifications (e.g. NACE Senior Corrosion Technologist, NACE Cathodic Protection Technologist (CP-3), and NACE Cathodic Protection Specialist (CP-4))

Desired:

  • Possess a Graduate Level degree in Engineering, Professional Engineering License, or equivalent
  • Able to present complex data and technical information in a simple and easy to understand manner
  • Experience with technology evaluation and deployments.
  • Fully proficient with protective coatings and linings specification, inspection, and evaluation including acceptance testing, qualification testing, and troubleshooting efforts on assigned programs.
  • Experience performing cathodic protection system planning, design, operation, and analysis along with condition assessment of facilities affected by corrosion is a plus
  • Experience with leading project teams including defining scope, creating a plan, and scheduling the work Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment managing multiple, complex tasks to achieve significant goals.
  • Outstanding communication, presentation and interpersonal skills working within all levels of the organization
  • Comfortable with computers: familiar with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
  • Experience working in the gas, electric or electric power generation industries
