Job Description

The Architectural Design Leader (ADL) position will be a key technical leader for their region. The ADL will report to the Sr. Director of Design Operations (SDDO) and will work closely with regional leadership across architectural, engineering and construction disciplines to help develop the balance of technical and design excellence within CRB’s architectural practice. They will be responsible to help advance our architectural design capabilities and industry presence within the region and with work closely with the Regional Discipline Leader (RDL). Additionally, this individual will help drive and develop a robust design culture across the region.

In this role, individuals will be required to demonstrate a deep understanding of the role of architectural design within the AEC industry and CRB Market types (including science & technology, cell & gene therapy, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or food & beverage industries) and will display high levels of energy and drive. This will serve as key position within the region and will support our regional leadership and the sales services and business development teams on establishing winning strategies for key pursuits within the region (proposal development). They will support key projects within the region to establish the architectural design approach/vision, direct architectural resources and enable the project for success.

The ADL will maintain a partnership with the RDL and discipline staff Group Leads (GL) to help promote the training and development of architectural staff to be well-round technical and design focused professionals. The ADL will work directly with the Director of Architectural Design (TAG) and will contribute to company-wide best practices, tool development, strategic capabilities advancement, etc.

The ADL is not responsible for resource assignments, planning, individual staff performance monitoring, individual career growth plans, developing training plans, and annual goal planning/performance reviews

Core Regional Responsibilities (90% of overall time):
  • Assist in providing tactical and strategic leadership/direction needed to achieve architectural design excellence within the region
  • Cultivate, promote, and maintain a strong discipline-based culture in the region by developing a strong technical network of excellence.
  • Partner with the RDL and GL to support the training and development of the architectural staff.
  • Mentor architectural staff to promote advancement in design and visualization capabilities.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of architectural staff capabilities, project opportunities, and staff availability in the region
  • Assist in facilitating regular design reviews from project inception through completion of concept design as needed
  • Develop strategic approaches to win design driven projects for the region’s core clients and project types working directly with marketing/sales, business development, project management, and regional leadership
  • Function as a guide, both internally and externally, for architectural design focused questions, clients, projects, and pursuits
  • On strategic and large design driven projects, act as the Lead Project Designer and work in unison with the Project Architect and/or Professional of Record (POR) to:
  • Assist in facilitating design charrettes with client and project team
  • Develop design concepts with the project architect and architectural staff
  • Working in concert with project team to develop high level programming and planning of facilities and campuses
  • Review design-related details, support MEP coordination, and identify approaches and solutions to ensure and enhance the design concept
  • Partner with Project Architect to support chartering and define the project design value and help team manage to the design budget established (Target Value)
  • Partner with Lead Interior Designer to ensure continuity of design between exterior and interior environments.
  • Attend critical construction meetings, review submittals, and construction progress updates as determined necessary by Project Architect and Project Manager.

Core Technical Advancement Group (TAG) responsibilities (10% of overall time):
  • Work Director of Architectural Design to contribute to the company-wide best practice sharing and development, tool development, and strategic capabilities advancement/thought leadership, etc.
  • Attend monthly design meetings with national and regional leadership to create a consistent design process across regions

  • Target is 75% billable, supporting regional projects (as described above)
  • 15% of the overall time will be focused key pursuits and regional support (as described above)
  • 10% of the overall time will be dedicated to the Technical Advancement Group

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Architecture from an accredited architectural program
  • Architectural licensure, in good standing, is required with the ability to easily obtain reciprocity (NCARB certification)
  • Minimum twelve (12) years of professional experience
  • In-depth knowledge of design, modeling and visualization focused tools such as Enscape, REVIT, Rhino, etc.
  • Sustainable practice accreditation is preferred (LEED, WELL, etc.)

Additional Qualifications
  • Effective verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with all levels of management
