A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Field Quality Assurance Technician and Repair Specialist must perform both non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections and welding repairs in accordance with work instructions, codes, and customer requirements. This position will have a physical presence at a minimum of 2 separate Valmont site locations including El Dorado, KS and Salina, KS. The percentage of time spent at any given location will vary from week to week depending on available workloads and orders in need of expedition.

  • Primarily performs inspections of steel poles coated with hot-dipped galvanized zinc and/or Tri-Force embedded pole paint systems at Valmont’s Salina Coatings Division site. Additional available time will be spent performing traditional NDT inspections or other duties at the Valmont El Dorado manufacturing location at the direction of El Dorado’s Quality Supervisor.
  • Performs post-galvanized toe-crack (PGTC) inspections using a combination of Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), and Visual Testing (VT). The candidate will also be responsible for identifying aesthetic deviations in need of remediation. They will also identify functional deviations in need of repair such as bare spots, excessive coating thickness in threaded and through holes, and other critical areas that may affect fit, form, and function.

This includes using UT examination to accurately mark out locations where toe cracks are suspected, followed by judicious mechanical removal of zinc and/or steel until the defect has been visually eliminated and subsequently verified via MT examination. Once the defect has been removed, the candidate will also perform the welding repairs as required.
  • Will re-examine their own work via the same NDT processes used during the initial inspection. After the repairs have been confirmed to be successful, Salina Coatings’ resident Quality Assurance representative will perform a final NDT inspection of the repaired area.
  • Candidate must be knowledgeable and comfortable enough with the subject matter to work with customers and or 3rd party inspectors hired on behalf of customers. This encompasses the ability to tactfully defend Valmont’s position when judgement calls arise, while still maintaining a professional attitude in-line with our company’s Core Values.
