          SSPC operates in the interest of the professional public it serves and it is subject to public and regulatory view.  SSPC relies on the dedication, flexibility and responsiveness of all of its staff to respond to its commitments and the services it provides.  We operate in a changing environment and must be able to respond outside the confines represented in this Profile.  Duties, processes and qualifications are subject to change by management and all staff are expected to perform with quality, integrity, innovation, flexibility, cost consciousness, cooperation and productivity.



  1. Conduct field and office audits of organizations (e.g. coating contractors; blast and paint shops, coating inspection firms) to verify compliance with SSPC qualification procedures (e.g. QP 1, QP 2, QP 3, QP 5, QP 6, QP 8, QS I, QN 1) and associated administrative programs IAW the Auditor SOP. (Minimum of 80 audits/training delivery events per year, and submit audit reports in a timely manner and in proper format.)

  2. Audit SSPC training programs.  Verify instructor(s) compliance with SSPC administrative procedures and adherence to technical content.

  3. Proctor SSPC Certification Exams (e.g. C-7, C-12, CAS, ACAS) as directed

  4. Travel extensively as needed to complete audits and other assignments.



  1. Represent SSPC at industry meetings/conferences on technical and regulatory issues as assigned.

  2. Support PCCP Certification Manager to implement and improve the administration of all QP certification programs.

  3. Review technical material  (e.g. standards ballots; training material; book chapters; technical articles)  for accuracy and relevance as assigned

  4. Participate in SSPC and other industry technical and advisory committees (e.g. PCCP Advisory; Applicator Qualification) as directed by the Director of Technical Services.

  5. Have the necessary facilities and ability to work from a remote site (i.e. telecommute) and report to Director on status of work projects and travel schedules.

  6. Instruct SSPC training programs as directed.

  7. Other duties as required.



    Minimum:  SSPC Certified Protective Coating Specialist or equivalent; or SSPC or NACE Certified Level II Coatings Inspector in good standing.  Must be SSPC C-3/C-5 qualified if performing QP-2 audits. OSHA 30 hour training. Specialty training (e.g. Concrete Coating Inspector, Metallizing) or equivalent training/experience when assigned to perform certain QP audits (QP 6, QP 8, QN-1).

    Meet training and experience requirements of SSPC Competent Person/Supervisor for Deleading of Industrial Structures  plus  a minimum  of 5 years full time experience in the industrial protective coatings industry conducting technical quality  or safety audits, coating and lining inspection  services  or related work.

    Have formal auditor training on the principles of auditing (classroom or distance learning) - A 2-day or 16-hour course is an acceptable minimum, or equivalent quality auditing experience.

    Must possess the ability to travel extensively by air, land and water; must have a valid U.S. driver’s license.

    Complete SSPC training on assigned QP programs. 

    Conduct at least one audit in each assigned certification category under the observation of the Senior Technical Auditor or Corporate Certification Specialist.

    Be recommended for auditor certification by the PCCP Certification Manager or Director of Technical Services.



         Organizing and coordination of audits.  Scheduling capability; make cost effective and efficient travel arrangements; handle multiple assignments; attention to detail and accuracy when writing audit reports; ability to interface with members, owners and their representatives at job sites, external providers; respond to periods of heightened activity; participate in teams and task groups; good business writing and oral communication skills; problem-solving and  interpersonal skills; good PC skills; ability to access and use internet to communicate with office (e.g. send emails, audits and other reports electronically).



No additional qualifications needed; work condition factors are essentially the same as for the Primary and Essential Duties and Processes.
