Axalta Named Exclusive BMW Paint Supplier

Global liquid and powder coatings supplier Axalta Coating Systems Ltd. recently announced that it has been chosen as the exclusive supplier for the BMW Group’s private paint label, ColorSystem.

According to the company’s release, the new agreement will come with a network of 730 dealerships and collision repair partners.  

Axalta states that ColorSystem is designed to offer refinishing solutions that meet BMW Group's original manufacturer standards.

Global liquid and powder coatings supplier Axalta Coating Systems Ltd. recently announced that it has been chosen as the exclusive supplier for the BMW Group’s private paint label, ColorSystem.

“The BMW Group selects only the best products for its dealerships and collision repair partners to ensure the highest standards of quality, efficiency and sustainability,” said Troy Weaver, Senior Vice President, Global Refinish, Axalta.

“Following a rigorous process, Axalta has proven it can maintain exceptional service for the BMW Group’s dealerships and customers. We look forward to building a mutually beneficial, strong and future-proof relationship as well as growing the ColorSystem network to even more collision repair shops and in more countries.”

The release adds that as part of the agreement, Axalta plans to provide its Fast Cure Low Energy technology paint system, which has the potential to reduce carbon equivalent emissions and energy consumption by up to 45%.

The agreement will reportedly last through December 2028 and is expected to add to existing supplier agreements with BMW Group.

In August, Axalta reportedly entered a partnership with Xaar, a manufacturer of drop-on-demand inkjet technologies, to develop a sustainable digital paint technology for the transportation industry. 

According to Axalta's press release, Axalta NextJet could help to enable design flexibility for two-tone vehicles, while also allowing customers to create patterns, details and images in a sustainable way.

Digital paint, also referred to as overspray-free application, is reportedly an advanced paint application that can allow for precise paint placement. The digital paint coating technology also reportedly eliminates masking and reduces labor, energy and waste while increasing productivity and efficiency rates.

The release stated that using NextJet would contribute to a 30% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and significant cost savings for two-tone vehicle manufacturers.

Axalta NextJet was believed to be the first partnership between an inkjet printhead manufacturer and a coatings manufacturer. The combined technology solution was reportedly being tested with customers and could be in production as early as 2024.
