Wish your walls could do more? Maybe even emit light?
German lighting designer Ingo Maurer has developed a wallpaper that may just quench your thirst for high-tech walls.
LED wallpaper is the first non-woven wallpaper that features LED light sources dispersed over the wall, creating a “diffused light,” according to Architects Paper, the company producing Maurer’s creation.
“The wall itself seems to glow,” the Munich-based company says.
Controlling the Circuits
The wallpaper is equipped with three separately controllable circuits, which allow the switching on, off and dimming of the monochrome LEDs in white, red and blue, according to the product literature. The lights can be turned off and on to create different colors and patterns.
The plastic film imprinted with conductive circuits is applied like conventional wallpaper and is available in white, green and black, according to the company.
One length of the wallpaper measures 320 x 60 cm (about 10 by 2 feet) and contains 840 LED lights, according to technical data. The LED Wallpaper “set” also includes an electronic ballast and aluminum baseboard.
The cost for one width of the wallcovering roll is about $3,260, according to Architects Paper.
Illuminated Development
“The desire to design and use a[n] illuminated wallpaper has been on my mind for many years,” said Maurer.

Maurer has been developing the product for three years, reports relate. The designer specializes in the design of lamps and light installations. His website showcases many of his lighting technologies.
Many of Maurer’s creations have won accolades.

LED wallpaper is the first non-woven wallpaper with hundreds of integrated LED lights, according to Architects Paper. |
Earlier this year, the German Design Council selected LED Wallpaper for an Interior Innovation Award.
“In my work, I always try to evoke wonder and emotional reactions—and to enhance the well-being of those who use my designs,” Maurer said.
Architects Paper, a brand of A.S. Creation, offers a small number of hand-finished innovative wall coverings.
