Due to the risks of hydrocarbon fires or explosions and the fragility of some operating equipment and controls, the surface preparation practices employed widely throughout the coatings industry can oftentimes not be used on offshore structures. Too often this means that less productive and/or less effective surface preparation occurs, which can shorten coating system life spans or adds to the frequency of repainting.
