The Effect of Abrasive Blast Media on the Corrosion of Steel

In an earlier study presented at SSPC 2018 and published in JPCL, it was shown that the corrosion-resistance properties of coated steel were affected by the type of abrasive blast-cleaning employed and the type of abrasive blast media used. In this article, further investigation into the effect of different blast media on the corrosion of steel protected by epoxy coating is undertaken. The effects on surface profile and the embedding of blast media were studied using G40 steel grit, coal slag, aluminum oxide and staurolite mineral mix....

A few questions, what size were each abrasive used for this test? Also was this blast done mechanically or by hand? Was an ISO 8502-3 Tape test performed for surface cleanliness?

Very useful study that highlights the need to specify peak count as well as profile height. We recently performed a similar study and obtained findings that are consistent with yours. We will be presenting our results in a paper at Corrosion 2020 in March.

Ben: Abrasive size as follows: Steel Grit - G40; Coal Slag - 20-40; Aluminum Oxide - 80 mesh; Staurolite Mix - 50-140 sieve retention Blasting was done by hand. ISO 8502-3 tape test was not performed. Russell: Looking forward to you paper at Corrosion 2020

What was the hardness of the steel grit. Was it new or a conditioned working mix?
