Putting the Pieces Together: Integrating Steel Repairs with Bridge Painting Projects

From JPCL, January 2019

By Kevin H. Keith, PE, LiRo Engineers, Inc.

Many bridge painting projects include steel repairs as part of the contract. Painting and steel repairs are performed by separate trades and often by separate contractors, but both must work together and be installed as a system to perform as intended. Great and comprehensive article on this issue. This situation is becoming more and more common for repainting projects due to delayed bridge maintenance painting. We have been involved in several major repair and repainting projects. We found it helpful to have on-site steel fabrication capability. Also use of organic zinc primer for both field painting and shop priming is also helpful.

One comment on bolts in the 'designer" section: If black bolts are used for weathering steel connections, ensure they are weathering steel bolts. For painted connections, I heartily agree with the use of galvanized bolts.

This article is a "must read" for everyone - owners, contractors, inspectors, designers - who are involved in bridge rehabilitation. Especially, on the larger structures. Maintaining our infrastructure properly is critical and the information in the article clearly illustrates the challenges.

SSPC AB-4 is a great tool for blasting during bridge maintenance projects. Great article.

Thanks for the comments. I will be giving a presentation of the paper at Coatings+ next week. Thanks for the tip about the weathering steel bolts. We have painted weathering steel repairs on the projects I worked on.
