Treating Exterior Concrete Walls with Coatings

From JPCL, April 2016

By Ray Tombaugh, KTA-Tator Inc.

Coatings applied to exterior concrete walls improve aesthetics, isolate and protect the concrete and the building interior from the environment, and make cleaning an easier task. The selection and use of several prominent coating types used on concrete walls are discussed in this article....

Concrete cures @ 28 days. Alkali Resist Primer is yet applied. Does this make economic or technical sense?

I understand mineral silicate technology is not well known in the US, but is widely accepted in Europe as a concrete finish. Given the scope of this article, I'm surprised this technology was not included.

Concrete does not cure in 28 days. It is actually the specimen age when concrete should reach 75% of its designed compressive strength. Checking the pH of the surface prior to coating the concrete would be a better indication of whether a "hot" primer would be required or not.

Regarding the statement under Block Fillers: "Acrylic coatings and block fillers should not be substituted for an elastomeric coating since they do not have the same elongation capabilities as the elastomeric coatings." What is your definition of an "acrylic coating" vs. an "elastomeric coating"? I have run into this apples vs. oranges comparison for the 32 years I have been in the chemical industry, and I really need to find out what concrete coatings guys are talking about when they refer to "acrylics" (a chemistry) vs "elastomerics" (a modulus).
