Corrosion Protection in Maritime Environments: Assessing Systems for Offshore Structures

From JPCL, March 2016

By Günter Binder, Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW)

The author compares the accuracy of laboratory test results to that of long-term tests in nature and discusses the creation of standards in order to prevent corrosion of offshore wind generating structures under very corrosive conditions with minimal environmental impact....

This is the only comprehensive presentation that I've seen on corrosion of offshore wind turbine applications. What is blatantly missing, however, is the corrosive effects of a saline atmosphere on all the electrical components, contacts, connections, etc.. Unrelated to corrosion, but a point of concern to me, would be the predominance of spiders carried in the wind near shores or coast lines. I wonder what maintenance personnel encounter inside the towers or nacelles? Factors such as these, question the great cost disparities between water & land installations. The Europeans haven't been too free in releasing info on this, and accordingly, more thought should be considered before using the Atlantic here. Finally, do storms in the North Sea, for example, have the same force as Nor'Easters here?

the presentation is not exhaustive because it doesn't mention the contribution of the Zinc or Al thermalspray coating plusa high performace paint system which are the highest savings in maintenance costs
