I realize this piece is written by one specific company, presumably focusing on their own technologies (which are interesting), but it does not appear to be a complete review of the field of functionalized coatings. Work inspired by micro-textures in other organisms allows for functionalized coatings that can produce non-pigment color, self-cleaning surfaces, and non-chemical antimicrobial properties. I would be interested to see more content on these topics. See for more detail on some of these functionalized coatings.
