The use of chromate passivation treatments on galvanized steel structures, not just decking, creates serious issues for coating contractors addressing surface preparation on projects where the galvanized steel has already been installed. Abrasive blasting called out in SSPC-SP16 is seldom an option in commercial buildings, parking facilities and institutional structures where adjacent substrates are often concrete, glass, stone and stucco. Phosphoric acid treatments have been traditionally used and are still recommended by some chemical and coating suppliers but the effectiveness of such treatments in the presence of chromate passivation treatments is now called into question. Should galvanized steel components be surface prepped prior to being installed in structures or should building industry pressure be applied to galvanized steel suppliers to stop using chromate passivation treatments?
