Erosion due to cavitation is a difficult problem to solve. This article reinforces that point by demonstrating that even the best cavitation-resistant coatings will experience material loss. A glass filled relatively hard surface is not the most erosion (due to cavitation) resistant surface. A similar comparative study may compare and analyze the durability of a metal material, to the durability of the cavitation-resistant coating. There are commercially available products which are 2 component, 100% solids, elastomeric urethane systems that have consistently demonstrated higher cavitation erosion resistance than 316 stainless and carbon steel (ASTM G-32). Look for a two component, 100% solids elasto-ceramic polymer composite that combines the superior strength, durability and adhesion of an epoxy with the exceptional flexibility, abrasion resistance and shock-absorbency of an elastomeric urethane.
