The most common reason for touch-up mismatch may be application method. Most projects are sprayed or sprayed and back-rolled these days. Most touch-up is done by brush or roller. On a stucco surface the addition of more material will fill in the texture creating a light spot. If a sand texture surface was not back-rolled the only touch-up options are to repaint corner to corner or spray the touch-up paint.

I suppose it is not common in the industrial painting world, but a touchup can be "blended in" with the surrounding paint by using a "dry brushing" or "drybrush" technique on the edges of the touchup. This creates a visual blending of the colors between the patch and the bulk material. Not a universal solution, but it can be helpful when the touchup color is "close, but not close enough." Drybrush eliminates the hard line of demarcation between the patch and base wall color.
