Hi all i am due to start a project applying a reinforced lining to the internal of a large tank. The tank in question is riveted and what concerns me is applying the fibreglass matting over the rivets due to air entrapment due to the awkward shape. Has anyone used this system over a riveted tank and if so have you any advice to enable the project runs to plan. Thanks L Whaley

Hi Lawrence. For areas such as rivets, welds, plate overlaps, corners and deep pitting we would use a caulking product that is compatible with the lining. The caulking product is basically a paste grade product which can be built up to higher thicknesses. This is used to fill the uneven area and produce a smooth, continuous surface over which the reinforcement mat can be applied without entrapping air.

Thanks for your speedy reply. The problem i think i will have is the specification does not allow for caulking of rivets, only overlaps, pitting and corners .Hopefully it all runs to plan but expelling the air entrapment could become a massive problem. Thanks for your advice i will keep you updated.

Hi Lawrence. In my opinion the specification and final quality of the lining would be greatly improved by including caulking of the rivets. I would try as hard as possible to convince the owner that a specification change now may reduce labour (it will take a while to get the mat over the rivets and push out all the air out) and will increase the chances of the lining being correctly applied. All - there are a lot of things which need to be considered when caulking rivets - would almost take as long to go through them as Matthews paper. I am happy to take this up as a separate issue.
