Painting the Walt Whitman Bridge: A Close Look at the Coating Systems Used

The Walt Whitman Bridge painting project, recipient of the 2019 SSPC George Campbell Award for completion of a difficult or complex industrial coatings project, included surface preparation and painting of the bridge’s entire 2,000-foot suspension span, two 750-foot suspended side spans, and deck support steel inside of the anchorage vaults. Many of the challenges of this project were discussed in the author’s October 2018 JPCL article and SSPC 2018 presentation. In this article, the author takes a closer look at the surface preparation methods and coating systems employed on the different parts of the bridge, and explains why these methods and products were chosen.


The NTPEP Concrete Coatings and Sealers Evaluation Program

The National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (NTPEP) is a public-private partnership that prevents duplication of efforts among the 52 state departments of transportation. NTPEP provides product evaluations and facility audits for different products used in the transportation industry ranging from asphalt release agents to geo- textiles. One of the newer programs within NTPEP is a standardized evaluation for the performance of concrete coatings and sealers (CCS). This article provides the history and improvements made to the program since its inception and an overview of the newly revised testing protocol.


The Effect of Abrasive Blast Media on the Corrosion of Steel

In an earlier study presented at SSPC 2018 and published in JPCL, it was shown that the corrosion-resistance properties of coated steel were affected by the type of abrasive blast-cleaning employed and the type of abrasive blast media used. In this article, further investigation into the effect of different blast media on the corrosion of steel protected by epoxy coating is undertaken. The effects on surface profile and the embedding of blast media were studied using G40 steel grit, coal slag, aluminum oxide and staurolite mineral mix.
