This article gives a brief review of the history of SSPC-PA 2 and describes the five steps to measuring DFT according to the most recent edition of PA 2. The author gives special attention to how PA 2 addresses the required number of coating thickness measurements; the acceptability of gage readings as well as spot and area measurements; nonconforming thickness; and measuring DFT on coated edges and pipe exteriors.

This month, we will briefly review the composition of concrete and why we coat it. We will then describe some of the characteristics that make concrete difficult to coat and protect. The rest of the Bulletin will be devoted to explaining how properly applied coatings protect concrete.
