This method standardizes materials and preparation requirements for steel test panels used for performance testing of coatings prior to application of the coatings for testing. Its objective is to minimize variations in coating performance that may be affected by variations in the metallurgy of the steel used for the test panels and the procedures for preparation of the test panels, including panel, size, geometry, surface preparation, coating application, and scribing. The standard can be used by coating manufacturers, coating testing laboratories and owners who perform in-house performance testing to evaluate multi-coat systems consisting of most types of protective coatings for use on steel.
