What is the best way for me to assure I'm getting what I want when I specify a decorative finish such as glazing or gilding?

From BARRY AFFLECK of protek paint on December 5, 2011:
All manufacturers offer data sheets, factory samples, and spec. sheets. Quite often,  samples from applicators do not respect correct methods suitable to the substrate, and the finish fails on the wall. A signed-off sample is no guarantee it was  respected on the substrate. Do a manufacturer's spec sheet and you will get the appropriate warranty if the applicator has its approval. I am underlining Lance's premise comment.

From Lance C Futcher of PaintGuru Pty Ltd on October 24, 2011:
I assume that what you are referrng to is to assure that the painter or contractor uses the product that you specify. This is a major problem; and it seems to me that one of the ways that will, as near as possible, guarantee that the correctly specified material is used is to a) write a clear and specific specification; b)follow up with the contractor or home owner to see if the products and system you specified are being used; c) only recommend to the home owner apainter or contractor who  will follow your specifications; and d)  tell the home owner that you will only guarantee that the correct colour or finish will be obtained by following your specification or system by usuing the colours from the companies you specified.

From Barbara Jacobs of Barbara Jacobs Color and Design on March 30, 2011:
Yes, I agree. No decorative finishes without approved sample boards.

From Peter Evans of K & P Interiors LLC on March 16, 2011:
Simple. Get a sample board made. If you're happy with the result, sign off on the actual sample.
