What criteria of selection should be used in deciding between a liquid-applied and a sheet-applied air barrier?

As vapor-permeable sheet air barriers are now available, the criteria for selection of liquid vs. sheet applied focus more on installer expertise and the substrate. Sheet applications can be handled by less experienced installers in segments as other work is erected; it is also relatively easy to inspect sheet joints and correct defects. Liquid-applied air barriers require higher installer expertise; the thin-coating air-barrier types need more uniform, smoother, and stable substrates, while sheets and thick membrane-type liquid air barriers are more forgiving of irregular substrates.
