During newbuilding, do I have to stripe coat edges if I am using an edge retention primer?

More items for Coating Application

From FRIDAY OWAJI of DELATTRE BEZONS on September 7, 2013:
Yes stripe coating the edge is the best thing, but the applicator should determine if the spec calls for it.

From Empty Jasson of Hai Phong on February 22, 2013:
Yes, during newbuilding, stripe coat must be carried out on all edges.

From James Albertoni of CA Department of Water Resources on January 22, 2013:
Technically, you only have to do what the spec says. If your spec doesn't call for stripe coating, then it is not required. However, it is always a good idea and will prolong the life of the coating.

From Per Gabrielsson of Free Lance Consultations and Inspections on January 22, 2013:
Yes, of course. Physical forces drive the coating away from edges. Always stripe coat with brush, if possible. Stripe also a few cm's from edges.

From Tom Schwerdt of Texas Department of Transportation on January 24, 2013:
Best practices would be to stripe-coat the edges. I have seen numerous "edge retentive" primers which had 50% or less thickness at an edge when compared to the flat.

From Atanas Cholakov of Insignia JFZ on January 23, 2013:
Per, if this is not highlighted in the coating spec, then RFI needs to be risen to seek clarification. Stripe coat is almost always necessary, but IOZ systems might be exempted. The coating spec insists (rules)... nobody else.

From Atanas Cholakov of Insignia JFZ on January 21, 2013:
This question can be best answered from your Coating Spec., pre-job meeting. Assessment of structure complexity and accessibility for spray will be an important step with following highlight on areas to be stripe-coated. The paint supplier's tech. rep's opinion is of importance as well.

From Daniel Liu of APC on February 6, 2013:
Before the project starts, the application procedure, of course including stripe coating, is normally  fixed, mainly based on the specs, during the pre-job conference. If this point is not required or highlighted in the specs, you can apply the stripe coat where necessary, such as poor manual welds with undercuts, etc. In this case, trust your experience!

From Per Gabrielsson of Free Lance Consultations and Inspections on January 23, 2013:
Atanas, accessibility for spraying has nothing to do with the need for stripe coating. If you aim to spray an edge, how much paint do you actually have on that? And how much dry spraying of adjacent areas? In shipping we know the limitations of the paint supplier;  this is why WE (the owner's inspectors) have to insist in stripe coatings.
