Would you/have you encouraged your child or other young adult to pursue a career in coatings? Why or why not?

When my kids got old enough, and were getting out of college I tooled up to have them join me, one started his own company the other joined him, The other one runs the company now. My competition borrows equipment from me.

This is a dying profession, younger people are not interested. Companies in this industry need to create a more positive outlook and future.

Being in the analytical side of coatings (R&D), I love the unending layers of knowledge that comes with this type of product. As a result, my career is never boring and I would encourage my children (ages 7 & 9) or other young adults to pursue my type of coatings career should they show the slightest interest. My husband though is encouraging them to be bankers and I'm not disagreeing just so there's some hope for their pocketbooks as well!

I started my painting company out of need not from a desire to own a painting co. Of all the service trades it is one of the easiest ones to enter and doesn't require a lot of money to start. My son began working on the weekend in my company at a young age, went on to work full time and became a foremen. By the time he was 22 he went into computers, got a fantastic job making twice as much. I encouraged him to keep that career path and he never looked back and is very successful. He is making more than he ever could have in this trade, as a painter. Over the years family members have worked in my office doing general office work and payroll. One went on to get a job with a major national company (SAIC)in their payroll dept. This industry has many different aspects to it. I would encourage someone to look beyond being a painter, the coating industry has so much to offer.
