Poseidon Sciences Group (New York, N.Y.) has expanded its marine eco-toxicology testing. According to the company, the marine coatings industry is sensitive to the challenges of the environmental movement since coatings are placed directly in an aquatic environment.
The company offers biological testing of chemical substances against a panel of various marine and freshwater larvae to help determine the effects of coatings or chemicals on aquatic species.
According to the company, test coupons made of PVC are sent to the project sponsor company to be coated with industrial coatings for testing. Poseidon then uses a simulation method, immersing the panels into seawater containing the target aquatic species. Seawater is continuously added into the chamber to provide a 100% exchange with new seawater per day. The mortality of the species in the presence of the coated panel is determined after 24 to 48 hours.
The company also provides acute testing, usually for biochemicals dissolved in seawater, with a flow-through system that test runs in static mode. Mortality is determined at 24 to 48 hours.
The company says that there is seasonal availability of some species for testing, since some are derived from hatcheries and some collected in the wild. The test method follows ASTM E 729-96.
