A project to renovate the interior of a historic railroad station in Gaithersburg, MD, is out to bid.

The Baltimore and Ohio (B & O) passenger rail station is located on the MARC Brunswick Line between Washington, DC and Martinsburg, WV.

Bids for the work are due Aug. 7, according to the City of Gaithersburg.

Scope of Work

The project will include coating downspouts with exterior-grade industrial enamel.

The one-story depot, which dates to 1884, was designed by Ephraim Frances Baldwin and features a bond brick exterior with a timber gable roof.

In addition to minimal coating application, the project will also include constructing new restrooms, a new electrical room, a new storage room with floor and loft storage, as well as performing additional mechanical and electrical work.

A cost estimate was not released for the work.

Depot, Shed History

The station and freight shed were conceptualized by noted designer Ephraim Francis Baldwin and constructed in 1884. Baldwin designed several railroad depots, 150 of which are still standing today.

The B & O depot serves as a central focus of Olde Towne Gaithersburg and is a busy stop on MARC’s Brunswick Line.

In addition to the minimal coating work, the project will also include constructing new restrooms, a new electrical room, and a new storage room.

The one-story railroad station has a bond brick exterior with a timber gable roof with slate tiling. The interior is wood-framed with wooden wainscoting, hardwood floors and solid wooden doors. The freight shed was extended east in 1905.

Both buildings were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
