Longest Cable-Stayed Bridge Opens

The world’s longest cable-stayed bridge opened at the stroke of midnight Thursday (July 18) in China, after four and a half years of construction.

The Jiashao Bridge stretches across the Hangzhou Bay with a span that is 10.1 km (6.28 miles) long; the entire structure measures more than 60 km (37.28 miles) in length.

With its longest span reaching a length of 6.28 miles, the Jiashao Bridge in China is now the world's longest cable-stayed bridge. It opened at midnight on Thursday (July 18).

Travelers eager to drive across the bridge started to line up three hours before it opened, Zhejiang News reported.

Commute Cut in Half

The eight-lane bridge connects two cities in the Zhejiang province, Jiaxing and Shaoxing. Shanghai, located northeast of Jiaxing, would usually take drivers three hours to get to from Shaoxing, but that time is now cut in half with the new bridge.

The bridge is the second cross-sea bridge over Hangzhou Bay. Construction of the Jiashao Bridge started on Dec. 14, 2008.

According to South China Morning Post, the first person to cross the bridge was Li Xinqiao, a businessman traveling to Shanghai. Planning to travel to Shanghai in the afternoon, Xinqiao decided to make the trip earlier once he learned the bridge would open at midnight. (Coincidentally, "xinqiao" can mean "new bridge" in Chinese.)

Construction on the bridge started in December 2008 and was featured on the Discovery Channel.

While under construction, the bridge was featured on the Discovery Channel show "Man Made Marvels."

Before the Jiashao Bridge was completed, the Russky Bridge in Russia held the title for the longest cable-stayed bridge with its longest span reaching 0.69 miles.

Drivers will be charged a toll of ¥40 ($6.52 USD).
