Limestone County, AL, authorities are seeking contractors for an extensive 10-year tank maintenance project in Athens, AL.

Bids are due July 22 to the Limestone County Water and Sewer Authority.

The maintenance work will involve inspection, repairs, and recoating on nine existing water storage tanks and one existing concrete clearwell. The steel ground storage and elevated tank structures range in size from 500,000 gallons to 2 million gallons. The concrete clearwell is 250,000 gallons.

Project Details

Most of the tanks will receive complete interior and exterior rehabilitation, while a few will receive only one or the other. The interior surfaces will be abrasive blast cleaned to SSPC-SP 10 (Near-White) and lined with either an epoxy or 100% solids epoxy system.

The million-gallon Pinedale tank will be the last of 10 tanks to be rehabilitated.

The exterior surfaces will be abrasive-blast cleaned to SSPC-SP 6 (Commercial) and coated with a zinc epoxy-urethane or fluoropolymer system. Full containment is required during the rehabilitation process. The 250,000-gallon concrete clearwell will be pressure washed to 6,000 psi and recoated.

Work will begin this year, starting with rehabilitation of the New Cut Tank, a 1 million-gallon elevated structure. The final tank to receive full rehabilitation is the Pinedale tank, a 1 million-gallon elevated structure, with work beginning in 2021.

The Limestone County Water and Sewer Authority was incorporated in 1980 and currently serves over 16,381 customers.
