Rust-Oleum Corp. is expanding its family of specialty primers and coatings with the acquisition of XIM Products Inc., founded generations ago as a manufacturer of bonding primers and sealers.

Rust-Oleum brands include Varathane, Zinsser, MultiSpec, Modern Masters and Watco.

“XIM brands and products broaden our portfolio of specialty coatings, enabling us to offer more solutions to customers seeking to solve difficult painting problems,” said Tom Reed, president and chief operating officer of Rust-Oleum, based in Vernon Hills, IL, near Chicago.

Founded in 1921, Rust-Oleum produces paints, primers, automotive, industrial and concrete coatings and wood-care products under the company's own brand and others, including Stops Rust, Painter’s Touch, EpoxyShield, Varathane, Zinsser, MultiSpec, Modern Masters and Watco.

About XIM Products

XIM Products was founded in 1935 as a manufacturer of bonding primers and sealers.

"Early XIM products had the characteristics of both a paint and an adhesive," the company says on its website. "One of the earliest XIM products was designed to bond to aluminum without pre-treating or etching."

Ohio-based XIM Products produces primers, sealers, specialty coatings additives, and surface preparation products. The company dates to 1935.

The company's name came from a filing formula ("XIM" meant X1000) on the test formula for that product, which was called Flashbond.

Today, the Westlake, OH-based company still produces Flash Bond products as well as primers, sealers, specialty coatings additives, and surface preparation products.
