Bids are invited to clean and recoat two fuel tanks once used for experimental nuclear power, the Nebraska Public Power District has announced

The project involves pressure washing and recoating two peaker diesel fuel storage tanks (500,000 gallon and one million gallon) at Sheldon Station, a coal-fired generating plant located near Hallam, NE.

Bids are due July 12. The district did not release a cost estimate for the work.

Project Details

The steel will be pressure-washed and overcoated with an epoxy-urethane system.

Sheldon Station was built in the early 1960s as an experimental nuclear power plant.

The contract also includes an alternate item that allows for abrasive blast cleaning the tanks to a Commercial finish (SSPC-SP 6) and recoating with a zinc-rich urethane primer, an epoxy intermediate and a poly-functional hybrid urethane finish.

The existing coatings contain lead; containment will be required. No on-site water sources are available for painting the one million gallon tank at Hebron. Fire hydrant water sources are available at the Hallam site.

About Sheldon Station

Sheldon Station was constructed between 1958 and 1963 as an experimental nuclear power plant for the Atomic Energy Commission. Today, the plant's two boilers can generate 225 megawatts of electricity.
