A Washington State contractor who was the sole bidder on an industrial coating project in Tacoma, WA, has been green-lighted for the job.

The City of Tacoma awarded Coatings Unlimited Inc., of Kent, WA, a $217,216 contract for lead abatement and coatings work on the exterior surfaces of a standpipe in Tacoma.

The project will involve cleaning, lead remediation, repairs and recoating.

The 1.35 MG standpipe is a part of the North End wastewater treatment plant. Because the standpipe is in a residential neighborhood, noise control will be required throughout the project.

The project is set to begin Aug. 1 and is expected to be completed by Sept. 30.

Scope of Work

Coatings work includes abrasive-blast cleaning exposed steel surfaces on the standpipe to a Near-White finish (SSPC-SP 10).

After the surfaces are cleaned, they will be coated with a zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate, and an aliphatic urethane finish. Any exterior surfaces in need of repair will be solvent cleaned and abrasive-blast cleaned to a Commercial finish (SSPC-SP 6) before touch-up coatings are applied.

The existing coatings contain lead and chrome; containment will be required while these are disposed of, although the standpipe will remain in use during the abatement process.

Existing coatings containing lead and chrome will be contained during disposal.

Additional maintenance work includes caulking the upper and lower ring stiffener seams along the entire circumference of the tank.

About the Site

The North End wastewater treatment plant, built in 1968 and renovated in the 1980s and 1990s, is one of two operated by the City of Tacoma.

The plant received an award from Rutgers University for its ability to maintain a high productivity level while remaining cost-efficient. Both Tacoma wastewater plants implement environmentally friendly recycling practices to keep the area's marine environment in good condition.
