A free video tutorial on how to use SSPC’s VIS 3 surface preparation reference guide is now available as part of the PaintSquare Video Education Series.

Assessing Steel Surfaces Prepared by Hand- and Power-Tool Cleaning: SSPC-VIS 3 (4:05), presented by KTA-Tator Inc. and produced by PaintSquare, walks viewers through the appropriate use of the coating society's photographic reference guide.

Assessing Steel Surfaces Prepared by Hand- and Power-Tool Cleaning: SSPC-VIS 3, narrated by Matt Fajt, is the sixth installment in the Coating Inspection Instruments series.

"The photographs are an aid for determining whether a project meets or exceeds project specifications," explains narrator Matt Fajt, of KTA-Tator.

About VIS 3

The SSPC-VIS 3 guide consists of a series of 43 full-color reference photographs to be used as a supplement to the SSPC standards for hand- and power-tool-cleaned steel.

The guide shows seven steel surfaces (four uncoated and three previously coated) before and after hand tool cleaning (SP 2), power tool cleaning with power wire brushes and sanding discs (SP 3), power tool cleaning to bare metal (SP 11), and commercial grade power tool cleaning (SP 15).

The guide also includes photos of SP 11 surfaces with a restored profile, a revised guide to the use of reference photographs, a new table of standards and conditions depicted, and additional explanatory notes.

As Fajt explains, the guide is divided into three sections: the initial steel conditions, the steel condition after hand-tool cleaning, and after power-tool cleaning.

Viewers will learn how to use the 43 reference photographs in SSPC-VIS 3.

Fajt then shows viewers how to assess the surface using the photographs as a guide. The surface will never be identical to the photographs, he advises.

The title is the newest addition to Coating Inspection Instruments: A PaintSquare Video Education Series, available exclusively through PaintSquare.com.

The series is co-produced by KTA-Tator and PaintSquare and will be rolled out throughout the rest of this year.

Coating Inspection Instruments

The Coating Inspection Instruments series teaches viewers how to work with a variety of instruments to achieve the best project results. All videos are available free in the PaintSquare's Video Learning Center.
