A construction worker has died several days after falling from the Lower Perry Bridge in La Grande, OR.

Karl D. Willhite, 25, of Klamath Falls, OR, was helping to build a wooden platform shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday (June 5) when he fell 23 feet from the bridge and landed on rocks, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office.

Willhite was taken by life flight to the Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, WA. He was originally listed in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries over the weekend, his employer, Oregon State Bridge Construction, confirmed Monday (June 10).

It was not known if Willhite was wearing fall protection or what he was doing when he fell.

Over 800 Injury-Free Days

Oregon State Bridge Construction was subcontracting for Oregon Mainline Paving on the Oregon Department of Transportation-funded project.

OSBC's website says that it has more than 800 work days without a single first aid incident or lost time injury.

The incident remains under investigation by the Union County Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police, and Oregon Department of Transportation.

Very sad. He's such a young man. Thoughts go out to his family.
