The City of Milwaukee, WI, has awarded an $8,682,616 contract to Zenith Tech of Waukesha, WI,to rehabilitate the St. Paul Avenue lift bridge over the Milwaukee River.

The 262-foot-long by 82-foot-wide bridge was constructed in 1966. In 1967, it received an award from the American Institute of Steel Construction, who dubbed it “The Most Beautiful Steel Bridge.”

A contract valued at over $8.6 million was awarded to Zenith Tech to clean and coat a 47-year-old lift bridge in Milwaukee, WI. The bridge will also receive additional improvements.

Scope of Work

Approximately 14,000 square feet of structural steel will be abrasive blast cleaned to a Near-White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and recoated with a zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate and a polyurethane finish.

Containment is required to encapsulate the existing lead-based coatings. Top flanges will also be coated.

The project also includes 1,738 square yards of protective surface treatment application and 7,540 square feet of concrete stain application.

In addition to the coatings work, the bridge will undergo additional improvements, including repairs to the concrete abutments and piers, as well as improvements to mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems.

A new bridge house roof will be put into place, as well as new pedestrian railings and pier plantings.

Zenith’s winning bid was one of two bids received for the project.

According to the city’s website, the bridge is scheduled to close on Sept. 3, 2013, in order for construction to begin. It will re-open in June 2014.
