The Delta Music Museum is warming up for a fast, thorough facelift inside and out, and bids are being invited for the work.

The Louisiana Division of Administration is looking for contractors to paint interior and exterior surfaces at the museum in Ferriday, LA.

The museum honors the musical greats of the Mississippi Delta region, with a special nod to local son Jerry Lee Lewis.

Bids are due May 14. A job site visit is required.

Project Details

The contractor must take care to remove all hanging exhibits from the walls and to cover any stationary exhibits and exhibit cabinets before beginning work.

The wood surfaces of the exterior windows, doors, trim and the porch ceiling of the 10-by-12-foot loading dock will be scraped, primed, and painted with a two-coat system. The 12 windows—eight of them nine by three feet, and four of them three by four feet—will also be glazed.

Volunteers staff the free museum, which is housed in a former post office.

The interior gypsum board walls of the front foyer, front office areas, exhibit areas, and upstairs hall areas will be repaired, cleaned, primed and also painted with a two-coat system.

All work should be completed within the six-week period following issuance of the notice to proceed. The contractor should provide a one-year unconditional warranty on the labor and materials provided, according to the bid documents.

Museum History

Opened with a state grant in 2002, the Delta Music Museum is housed in a former post office building that was constructed in 1939. The facility offers exhibits on 16 rock and roll and blues musicians from the Mississippi River Delta country, with a particular focus on local cousins Jerry Lee Lewis, Michael Gilley, and Jimmy Lee Swaggart.

The admission-free facility relies on the sale of souvenirs and is primarily operated by volunteers. It is located adjacent to the restored, 1920s-era Arcade Theater, where the museum often hosts performances.

The former post office is next to a theater where the museum hosts performances.

In 2012, many Ferriday residents feared the museum would close when state budget constraints forced the facility to limit its days of operation to avoid the layoff of essential staff. The museum has since reinstated a full weekday operating schedule as of February, according to Wikipedia.
