Hands-on demonstrations of two popular coating thickness gages are the latest free offerings in an original 30-part series of video tutorials presented by KTA-Tator Inc. and produced by PaintSquare.

Narrated by KTA-Tator president Kenneth A. Trimber, How to Measure Wet Film Thickness walks the user through the use of the Nordson Wet Film Thickness Gage. How to Measure Dry Film Thickness demonstrates the PosiTector 6000 F-Series gage.

The titles are the newest additions to Coating Inspection Instruments: A PaintSquare Video Education Series, available exclusively through PaintSquare.com.

The series is co-produced by KTA-Tator and PaintSquare and will be rolled out throughout the rest of this year.

Film Thickness How-tos

The wet film thickness video (3:30) covers the use of the Nordson gage and shows how to determine how much wet film to apply to achieve the desired finish. Applicators should be aware of two formulas for making this determination, Trimber explains.

How to Measure DFT

How to Measure Dry Film Thickness shows how to use plastic shims to verify the accuracy of the PosiTector 6000 F-Series before using the instrument.

The dry film thickness video (4:39) shows viewers how to use plastic shims to verify the accuracy of the PosiTector 6000 unit, which complies with both ASTM D 7091 and SSPC PA-2. Then Trimber walks the viewer through the use of the instrument. Verifying dry film thickness is a critical step in ensuring compliance with specification requirements and manufacturers' instructions, Trimber notes.

KTA Inspection Series

The Coating Inspection Instruments series teaches viewers how to work with a variety of instruments to achieve the best project results.

How to Determine Blast Cleanliness - SSPC VIS 1 Guide and Reference Photographs, the first title in the series, was released earlier this month.

Future installments focus on the use of:

  • DeFelsko PosiTector 200, SPG and UTG probes;
  • Fischer Dualscope FMP100;
  • PATTI adhesion testers for steel and concrete;
  • Thermometers;
  • Tooke Gages;
  • SSPC-VIS 2 and SSPC-VIS 3;
  • Adhesion testing;
  • Moisure meters; and
  • Rilem Tubes.
Blast Cleanliness Guide

In an earlier video, viewers learned how to use the SSPC VIS-1 Surface Cleanliness Guide to determine blast cleanliness on a coating project.

The entire series will be hosted by Trimber, who has been with KTA since 1968 and has more than 40 years of experience in the industrial painting field. He is a past president of SSPC and chairman of its Commercial Coatings Committee.

Trimber is an SSPC-Certified Protective Coatings Specialist, an SSPC C-3 Supervisor/Competent Person for the Deleading of Industrial Structures, and a NACE-Certified Coatings Inspector Level 3 (Peer Review).
