Protecting abrasive blasters in their dangerous work will be the focus of a free upcoming webinar by SSPC and JPCL.

"Safety in Abrasive Blasting" will detail the potential respiratory hazards that can occur from abrasive blasting and how to prevent them. The webinar will be presented from 11 a.m. to noon ET March 27.

"Safety in Abrasive Blasting" will cover personal protective equipment, applicable standards and exposures, respiratory hazards, respirator selection, and more.

The webinar will review:

  • The human respiratory system and how potential hazards such as particulates can damage it;
  • Applicable OSHA standards and exposure limits (including how to measure exposures);
  • How to understand the results of respiratory exposure testing;
  • How often testing should occur;
  • What types of respirators and personal protective equipment (PPE) can be used to mitigate the hazard;
  • How to select, care for, and use respiratory protection; and
  • How to select, clean, store, and wear different types of personal protective equipment.

About the Presenter

The seminar presenter is William J. Mills III, Ph.D., M.Sc., CIH, C. Chem. The president of Mills Consulting Inc., Mills has more than 25 years of experience in environmental, health and safety, chemical processes, and advanced technologies issues. He has worked for the private sector, government agencies, and academic institutions.

Presenter William J. Mills III, Ph.D., CIH, has 25 years of experience in EHS issues.

Mills has an international reputation and has worked in North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia as an expert in these areas. He frequently serves as a consulting expert for law firms and corporations on litigation matters and teaches Environmental Health & Safety at Northern Illinois University.

That presenter will be Rick Dupuy, founder and CEO of UHP Projects Inc., a waterjetting contractor founded in 1993. The company provides surface preparation and recoating services to the industrial and marine industries.

Since 1998, Dupuy has served on the SSPC technical committee that developed the written and visual standards now used for UHP surface preparation.

Both webinars are part of the JPCL/SSPC Webinar Education Series, which provides continuing education for SSPC recertifications and technology updates on important topics.

SSPC is an accredited training provider for the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE), and Professional Engineers in Florida may submit SSPC Webinar Continuing Education Units to the board. To do so, applicants must download the FBPE CEU form and pass the Webinar Exam, which costs $25.

Field Inspection and Repair of Transmission Pipeline Coatings,” presented Oct. 25, discussed the methods and materials used to repair pipeline coating systems and describe the field inspection techniques used to evaluate the condition of coatings exposed during routine pipeline maintenance.
