Barrier Coating is New Viral Phenom

More items for Coating Materials

Without cat tricks, drunken stunts or bad dancing, a barrier coating product video has become one of YouTube’s unlikeliest new sensations.

Ultra-Ever Dry is the latest of more than 300 products introduced over the last two decades by UltraTech International, based in Jacksonville, FL.

Founded in 1993, the company boasts the world’s most extensive spill containment product line, as well as products for stormwater management, facility protection, and construction compliance. UltraTech says it turns out about 20 new products a year and has racked up nearly 50 patents.

Ultra-Ever Dry is a barrier coating that repels liquids, including water, mud, wet concrete and oils, the manufacturer says.

But it is Ultra-Ever Dry that has put the industrial company on the viral map. The company's product video  has had nearly 5 million YouTube views since it premiered Feb. 6, and the product and video have been featured by such unlikely sources as NPR, treehugger.com and geek.com.

Repelling Oil, Wet Concrete

Ultra-Ever Dry is a superhydrophobic (water) and oleophobic (hydrocarbons) coating that the company says “will completely repel almost any liquid,” thus preventing corrosion, icing and contamination.

The product “uses proprietary nanotechnology to coat an object and create a barrier of air on its surface,” according to the company.

The product's demonstration video has had almost five million YouTube views since Feb. 6.

“This barrier repels water, refined oil, wet concrete, and other liquids unlike any other coating. Ultra-Ever Dry has vastly improved adhesion and abrasion resistance, compared to previous technologies, allowing it to be used in applications where greater durability is required.”

The product may be applied to steel, aluminum, other metals, concrete, wood, plastic, leather and fabric.

UltraTech recommends the coating for use on tools, equipment, personal protective equipment, motors, nuts and bolts, and “virtually any item that needs to be kept dry, corrosion free, de-iced, uncontaminated or clean” to prevent moisture and corrosion.

Features and Characteristics

“This is a new product geared toward industrial applications, where anti-wetting, anti-icing, anti-corrosion and self-cleaning is needed,” said UltraTech president David Shaw.

By repelling water, the company says, Ultra-Ever Dry provides corrosion protection and prevents the formation of ice.

UltraTech spill containment

UltraTech began making products for spill containment in 1993. Today, the company offers more than 300 environmental compliance products for a variety of industries.

The spray-applied coating also resists contamination, the company says. The product's working temperature range is from -30°F to 300°F (-34°C to 149°C). It lasts two to eight months in direct sunlight and outdoor conditions and "a year or more" in indoor or covered applications, according to the manufacturerr.

The company said it was working on formulations to increase the coating's service life. The product is currently available only in translucent white.

“Dust, dirt, water and other liquids that contain bacteria or radiation never actually contact the surface of the coated material, so bacteria and radiation is greatly diminished or eliminated and easy to decontaminate to sterile, if needed,” the manufacturer says.

The product is sold through UltraTech distributors worldwide.

Sounds like really neat stuff. I hope they can get the durability up to something more generally useful for industrial applications.
